The Ottawa Valley’s education system incorporates facilities within four publicly funded school boards. The Renfrew County District School Board is comprised of 27 elementary schools, seven secondary schools and five alternative schools. TheRenfrew County Catholic District School Board provides 20 elementary schools and two secondary schools. Conseil des écoles catholiques de langue française du Centre-Est, and Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario each operate an elementary and secondary French language school. Pre-school, academic nursery, kindergarten and Montessori Schools are also available.

Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley is the largest of Algonquin’s regional campuses and is located in Pembroke. The Campus delivers career focused training in several program areas including nursing, business, computer studies, the skilled trades and outdoor adventure. The campus serves approximately 800 full-time students and about 900 continuing education students each year. Established in the late 1960’s, the majority of its graduates remain in Renfrew County upon program completion, helping create a better trained workforce throughout the region.

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy in Barry’s Bay offers one, two, and three-year programs in the classical liberal arts at a college level, within the light of the teaching of the Catholic Church. Two major universities in Ottawa, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, are within 45 km from the eastern boundary of Renfrew County. The University of Ottawa also offers night classes at Algonquin College in Pembroke.

The County of Renfrew prides itself on a skilled workforce with its high literacy and numeracy rates. There is also a higher number of people with Trade Certificates than the national average.
